Novogene is delighted to be involved in the 3D’Omics Consortium, a Horizon 2020 Project with the aim of analysing host-microbiome interactions to optimise animal production.
Understanding the interplay between animals and their microbiome has been recognised as a key element in addressing their health, production, and sustainability. Many factors such as diet, exposure to pathogens and management practices contribute to the health of the animal microbiome and its interactions with other biomolecules within the host intestine. Many technical methods exist within microbial research that recognise the individual elements of the microbiome but fail to offer spatial context. The host intestine is a 3-dimensional landscape so new methods are required to reveal this arrangement – only then can we access the interactions occurring within it.
The project will use intestinal samples from chicken and swine to create libraries with their relative location data and distribute these to project partners across Europe for analysis and omics profiling. The new technology will be developed and used to assess the impact of certain factors on animal health and the shaping of the 3D internal ecosystem of the intestine. The project will inform everything from new methods for animal research, health, and production, to feeds tailored specifically to hosts and their microbiome.
Novogene will contribute as the project’s next generation sequencing partner, adapting its existing whole genome sequencing method to new tissue types, and will also be involved in innovating and designing new multiplexing methods suitable for the purpose of this research. Novogene will utilise its extensive experience in sequencing to make the new protocol scalable, efficient, and automated, at a significantly reduced cost. Novogene will also perform the sequencing of both 3D’Omic and conventional multi-omics libraries.
