Don't pay yourself. We're talking about many hundreds of $ depending on conference. Get your PI / institution to pay or don't attend, that's at least my take. Sure, some conferences have interesting speakers, but is this worth this amount of money? Cost of living is skyrocketing around the world, better save it to buy a house at some point.

That's a very good advice :) thank you!! But even though our institution is renomated, it is common for students to pay part of the dispenses themselves because the program doesn't have much money lol.

You might want to look for external (travel) grants. Depending on your location, it could be proposed by your European grant agencies or your local country grant organisations. Also, many big conferences usually have several grants for exceptional poster/talk presentations.

International Society for Computational Biology has multiple conferences spread through out the world. There is always the annual meeting that switches between US and Canada/Europe. You can find the listings here: https://www.iscb.org/

If you were more computationally inclined then RECOMB: https://recomb.org/recomb2024/

Worth paying your own money (especially when you are a grad student) that is a hard to answer question. Unless you are already independently wealthy :-)
