I wonder, especially in a woman's career, after a break for maternity and childcare, is it impossible for a successful reentry..?? what to do when the break extends for a promising opportunity? i hope it's not just my situation and that many women face similar challenges...!!!

Realistically speaking, there is a shortage in work force in almost any sector, including the research sector. The problem we often have when we look for new bioinformatics-related workforce is that simply there are no qualified applicants. Meaning, if you are (even remotely) qualified for the job then you have a good shot, so go ahead and try.
