To further develop and grow this ambition we are looking for a Bioinformatics Software & Data Engineer.
Your Job
As software & data engineer you create knowledge and insights from digital data. Within the R&D Digital innovation team of BASF Nunhems Vegetable Seeds, you create workflows, pipelines and digital tools for data acquisition, processing and analysis. You provide methods to create, explore and analyze large genetic and phenotypic information to support breeding decisions. You will play a significant role in the development of our existing genomics and genetics infrastructures by implementing best practices and improving technical designs to ensure platform stability at higher scalability. You will work in close collaboration with local bioinformatics. digital and research staff, as well as with global research and IT groups throughout BASF. You have a master’s degree in software engineering / computer science with a proven interest in research software development, or a degree in computational life sciences with a proven experience in developing robust software solutions. Excellent technical and programming skills in Python, and knowledge of Linux system administration is required. Knowledge of R and SQL is preferred.
Major Accountabilities
- Create and maintain unsupervised data-analysis and -integration pipelines
- Develop user-facing data applications
- Provide specialized technical expertise and technical advice in relation to data management, workflow development and data analysis methods
- Innovation; propose out-of-the-box solutions for the utilization, storage and management of data
Your profile
- Degree in computer sciences with a clear interest in plant biology, or a degree in Bioinformatics, Systems Biology or similar with a clear component of tool development
- Proven expertise in creating and support digital solutions for biological challenges
- Strong ability to create scalable and maintainable software in python
- Above-average knowledge of at least one other programming language (R, SQL, Rust, C)
- Proven competence in usage of software-development best practices (git, TDD, containers, etc)
- Knowledge of Linux HPC environments

Location:
The job is located in the village of Nunhem in the south east of the Netherlands. Internationally known cities on a commute distance of 45m to 1hr are Eindhoven (NL), Maastricht (NL) and Dusseldorf(DE).
Remote work:
Part of the week can be worked remote, the other part must be worked at the BASF| Nunhems global head quarters campus in Nunhem. The exact amount of days that can be worked remote depends on the job, and (not our choice but bi-country tax law) which side of the NL/BE/DE border you have primary residence.
