Are you a recent postdoctoral researcher in the life sciences (<3 years), ready for a new adventure abroad?

In a time of shifting job markets and changing political landscapes — particularly in the US, where termination of programs, mass layoffs at governmental institutions and policy shifts have left many researchers feeling uncertain about their future —you might be considering a fresh start. No matter where you’re coming from, if you’re looking for a stable, welcoming environment with world-class research opportunities, it’s time to consider a place you maybe hadn’t before: Sweden!

Sweden boasts a thriving life-science research community, renowned institutions, and a collaborative academic environment. And while it may not have been on your radar, adapting here is easier than you think—70% of the population speaks excellent English, making integration smooth both professionally and socially. Beyond the workplace, you’ll benefit from universal basic healthcare, generous paid holidays (starting at 28 days, with more as you get older), and outstanding support for young families, including extensive parental leave and sick leave to care for sick children. Outside the lab, Sweden offers breathtaking nature, with endless opportunities for hiking, skiing, kayaking, and exploring the great outdoors.

One fantastic opportunity that may suit you is the new SciLifeLab PULSE program, a postdoctoral program featuring both, an academic track and entrepreneurial track. While Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs may be scrapped elsewhere, the PULSE program at SciLifeLab is deeply committed to these principles. PULSE's evaluation criteria extend beyond impact factors and h-indices; the program values leadership potential, collaborative abilities, and a commitment to open and sustainable science, ensuring that researchers are equipped to become impactful leaders in both academic and industrial sectors. The program offers personalized career development plans (PCDPs) that include mentorship to guide training, support career goals, and help postdocs reach their full potential. Comprehensive training encompasses advanced research techniques, and transferable skills such as Open Science, FAIR data practices, and scientific communication.

The call is open till March 31, and you must come from abroad to apply! You will find all relevant information on the website! Apply yourself, and don't forget to tell your favorite wet-lab colleagues as well!

PS: There's a catch: Swedish mentality is very different from the US.

It is generally considered polite to be tolerant and to mind your own business, which means people on the street will rarely interact with random strangers, let alone engage in a small talk. But Swedes love "Fika", coffee party, so that is how you trick them into talking to you ;-)
