Why does Radian run so much slower than vanilla R?

TL;DR: I have switched over from R Studio to Visual Studio Code and am running R using the Radian console. However, the execution of commands is much slower on even basic commands (loading packages, reading in data, viewing basic objects from environment, etc.). Why is this? Has anyone encountered similar issues (I can't find any posts about this issue)? Is this something that can be resolved (and if so, how) or do I just have to switch back to using vanilla R? Many thanks!

Hi all,

I am working on a project based around the analysis of high-dimensional data. I am primarily using R, but some components require Python. As a result, I was interested in switching to Visual Studio Code so that I can have the same IDE for working with different scripting languages. The setup of VS-Code, especially for radian was a pain in terms of getting everything to work (installing extensions, configuring user settings, etc.), but I got everything to work and followed online tutorials.

However, having now worked with Radian for a bit, I have noticed that the execution of even basic commands/scripts is considerably slower than if I was working in R/R-Studio or even in VS-Code but using vanilla R. Commands like loading packages, reading in .tsv files, and viewing basic data objects from my environment, as some examples, are drastically slower using Radian. I am struggling to figure out why things are so slow, and I am even more interested in why I can't seem to find any posts online about people sharing similar experiences. Initially, I thought it might be because VS-Code has so many extensions to optimize the user experience (for .R/.rmd files and in the console), but this seems unlikely to be the sole or even leading source of the problem. For the time being, I have switched back to running my scripts in VS-Code using vanilla R, but I would like to figure out what is going on for the sake of curiosity and also with the hope of switching back over to Radian in the future.

Could anyone please help explain why Radian runs so much slower than R directly, and why I might be experiencing this issue (seeing as I can't find anyone else complaining about this)? Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

My Setup/Settings:

  1. I am working on a Macbook Air (2020), running macOS Sequioa 15.4.
  2. I have Python3 installed, am running the newest version of Radian, and have the newest version of R (4.4.2).
  3. VS-Code extensions installed: Error Lens, Path Autocomplete, Path Intellisense, R (REditorSupport), R Debugger, and some Python/Jupyter Notebook extensions.

Here are my user settings in VS-Code (json), if that's of any help.

I would recommend asking this on the radian GitHub discussion page.
