Come to Charlotte in May for Plant Genomics, RNA-Seq data analysis workshop
The UNC Charlotte Department of Bioinformatics and Genomics invites you to joins us for a symposium and hands-on workshop in RNA-Seq data analysis on May 13-14 at the UNC Charlotte City Center Campus, close to museums, restaurants, and other attractions.
For schedule and registration info, see: http://wings.iplantcollaborative.org
The meeting starts after lunch on Tuesday, May 13 with a Symposium followed by a buffet-style dinner and networking reception.
Symposium speakers and topics include:
- Gloria Muday, Wake Forest University, A kinetic analysis of the auxin and ethylene transcriptomes to investigate hormone crosstalk.
- Colleen Doherty, NC State University, Want more out of high-throughput data? Change your perspective.
- Beth Krizek, University of South Carolina, Regulation of flower development by two related AIL/PLT transcription factors.
- Jessica Schlueter, UNC Charlotte, Mapping the Oat Genome.
- Jeff Harper, University of Nevada, Reno, Pollen - a model for calcium ion signaling and insights into stress tolerance
- Mark Johnson, Brown University & Ravi Palanivelu, University of Arizona, Caught in the act: Pollen-Pistil Transcriptomics
- Xiangqin Cui, University of Alabama at Birmingham, Ann Loraine, University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Three things you need to know about RNA-Seq data analysis.
On Wednesday, May 14 we'll host three integrated workshops on RNA-Seq data analysis using an example data set provided by the Pollen Research Coordination Network. Participants will learn how to perform an RNA-Seq data analysis from beginning to end, starting with data processing, continuing with statistical analysis, and ending with biological interpretation. In the workshops, you'll learn about easy-to-use and powerful tools for doing reproducible, statistical analyses (RStudio and knitr), popular "command-line" tools for data processing (samtools, tophat, bedtools), and easy-to-use visual interfaces for visualization and biological interpretation, including Integrated Genome Browser (BioViz), Integrative Genome Viewer (Broad), FastQC, and PlantCyc/LycoCyc viewers for metabolic pathways data analysis.
Workshop instructors include
- Ann Loraine (UNC Charlotte)
- Xiangqin Cui (Biostatistics, University of Alabama at Birmingham)
- Naim Matesci (iPlant and the University of Arizona)
- Ivory Clabaugh (UNC Charlotte)
- And graduate students from the Dept. of Bioinformatics and Genomics at UNC Charlotte.
Registration for Symposium only:
- $20 for students
- $50 for individual, not-for-profit
- $100 all others
Registration for the Symposium and Workshop:
- $100 for students
- $150 for individual, not-for-profit
- $300 all others
Registration ends April 30. Travel awards and registration scholarships are available! Faculty and students from historically minority-serving universities are especially encouraged to apply along with postdocs and faculty interested in developing teaching materials in genomics and bioinformatics. If you would like a user-friendly, hands-on introduction to RNA-Seq data analysis using a real-life, never-before published data set, please join us!
A block of rooms has been reserved at a discounted conference rate at the nearby Holiday Inn Express. The hotel will hold the rooms until 5pm April 17 (extended deadline), so please be sure to register and reserve your room as soon as possible. Please see the hotel section on the conference Web site for more information.
