The MRC - University of Glasgow Centre for Virus Research (CVR) is seeking a computer programmer/software developer to develop, test, optimise and make accessible various bioinformatics computer programs generated in-house. This will include research on a medical diagnostic application for rapid identification of viruses from high-throughput DNA sequence data that will operate on standard desktop PCs. The successful applicant will be involved in all stages of the software development life-cycle, from programming core libraries to optimising and testing programs and developing simple, user-friendly graphical user interfaces. The successful applicant will also optimise current in-house bioinformatics software for multiple operating systems and help with their improvement and distribution. The post will be set within the CVR bioinformatics team, which has a staff of four people.
Applicants must hold a first degree in physics, IT or computer science or have 5 years of relevant experience, and have a thorough understanding and experience of programming using C and Java (ideally on a Windows operating system). Experience of data analysis in a biological context is desirable.
