just a quick note to those who use plink: it seems like it's finally being updated from the well established v1.07 to a brand new v1.9 alpha! it looks like it's currently being under very active development, but the first tests we've performed seem to corroborate the speed improvements they've implemented. it now accepts VCF files natively and many more improvements.

This is great, although I thought plink/seq was the new plink. Will they have different functionality? I'll have to look into this.

1.9 is designed for speed, memory efficiency, and backward compatibility; most command lines that worked in 1.07 will work unchanged with 1.9, but it'll be practical to handle much larger datasets (and/or worse hardware). PLINK/SEQ, on the other hand, is designed to address new classes of problems.
